The novel coronavirus also known as Covid-19 started in Wuhan, China and now it has spread to every continent on Earth.

On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization said it was no longer a public health emergency of international concern but a pandemic.

When you think of Coronavirus some of the words that come to mind are: Fear, anxiety, confusion, danger, conspiracy, contagious.

Across the global, the virus has infected million and caused thousands of deaths.

Since there are many myths doing the round, let’s try to clear them out:

1. Myth: Children cannot get Corona Virus.

The virus can infect people of any age, though kids are less likely to be affected, they are not safe and are vulnerable to the virus. All age groups can be infected by the virus. It’s just that the symptoms in children are less severe according to preliminary evidence.

2.Myth: Anyone who has Covid-19 dies.

Most of the cases of Covid-19 are mild and is fatal for only a small percentage of people.

Even the WHO reported that most people who have contracted the virus will experience a mild form of the disease and do not require special treatment in the hospital.

3.Myth: Eating chicken, eggs and meat can cause Corona Virus.

No scientific evidence shows that eating chicken, mutton and seafood can transmit Coronavirus and make it unfit for consumption.

There is no conclusive evidence that Corona virus can be transmitted through properly cooked food.

4.Myth: The virus was created as a bio-weapon.

This is just a conspiracy theory as there is no evidence that it is a man-made disease and the virus was made in a lab. SARS-Cov and MERS-Cov viruses have a close resemblance to the Corona virus.

5.Myth: Drinking alcohol can protect you from the virus.

Drinking alcohol, methanol does not prevent or cure Corona virus and it’s extremely dangerous.

Consuming excessive alcohol can increase risk of health problems.

Rather you should disinfect objects and surfaces which are touched regularly.

6.Only places with cold weather can have Corona virus.

This was one of the first myths related to Corona virus but as the weather changed it was seen that the virus can be equally transmitted in places with hot and humid climates as it can in places with cold weather and snow.

7.Myth: Face masks can protect you from the virus.

Wearing cloth face masks in public places where it is difficult to maintain distance from each other and help in slowing the spread of the virus from asymptomatic people and those who are not aware that they have contracted it.  It can protect you from the droplets but not against aerosolized particles.

Face mask need to be worn by staying cautious and taking precautions of not touching face.

Surgical masks and N95 respirators provide greater protection, but these are reserved for healthcare workers only.

8.Myth: 5G helps in the spread of the virus.

Many countries not having 5G mobile networks have seen spread of Corona virus and viruses cannot travel on radio waves and mobile network.

As Wuhan was one of the first cities to run trial for 5G in China, this theory came into existence.

9.Myth: Exposing yourself to Sun or temperature above 25C prevents Coronavirus.

No matter how hot the weather is it cannot prevent the Coronavirus disease. Countries with hot weather are also not safe from the virus and have reported cases of Corona virus.

10.Myth: Drinking and gargling warm water kills Corona virus.

Staying hydrated is a good thing but it’s not prevention against the virus. So gargling or drinking warm water every 15minutes with the sole intention of flushing the virus is not going to help.
