  1. Background

Ian was born in Kampala, Uganda and immigrated to the United States with his family, when he was eight years old. He has two brothers and a sister. In the United States, he lived in Maryland and Virginia. He attended middle school and high school in Maryland. He went to The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C. on an academic merit scholarship where he did his Bachelors and Masters in Computer Engineering, and won an audition to be one of his school’s graduation speakers, and spoke alongside Michelle Obama.

2.First startup

While at GWU, he got the entrepreneur bug and in 2008 founded his first startup, Leximo, the world’s first social dictionary app.

Leximo is a user-generated dictionary that allows its users to create, submit, and share their own definitions for words with others. It brings together the world’s cultures and languages by invoking the interactivity of today’s information age.

3.Pre-Blockchain Technology Career

Ian worked at IBM in sales as a Tech Evangelist. He was recognized as one of IBM’s top employees by being a member of the IBM Hundred Percent Club, due to achieving more than 100% of his million dollar sales quota. After four years with IBM, he retired from the corporate world to become a full-time cryptocurrency investor.

He previously worked at Deloitte as a Systems Integration Consultant.

In 2015 Ian founded the “Uber for freelancers”, Peer Hustle, a mobile on-demand freelancer marketplace for the sharing economy, that currently has over 5,000 freelancers around the world.

While he was working on Peer Hustle, he founded Fusion Video Producers, a video production company that worked with notable figures such as NFL wide receiver, Pierre Garcon, and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. Running this as a side-hustle, he was able to generate up to $7,000 a month on the side as a freelance videographer. Fusion Video released its first film, DC Fashion Week: The Documentary available on Amazon Video.

    Ian hobbies include making videos, writing, traveling, and basketball. He has always been a lover of different cultures, and Social Studies was his best subject in school.     9.Hacked

    On April 15th, 2018 while Ian was doing a livestream reviewing ICOs, a viewer informed him that his wallet addresses were hacked out of $2 million worth of crypto. A few hours later he noticed that he was signed out of his Google Sheets profile. In his Telegram group he wrote that he had been hacked and asked for help to find the perpetrators. 

    The event prompted accusations that Ian may have staged the hack to avoid taxes. But those accusations have been debunked and related arrests have been made.

     

    10.How was he hacked

    Ian’s Gmail was compromised. The recovery email on that was his college account. His college account was hacked in a data breach and someone posted his old password for that. So they were able to get in that way. From there, they were able to get access to his Evernote where he used to store stuff when he was traveling. He had some private keys in there. Unfortunately, he had encrypted them with another password they found in a data breach.

    It resulted in him losing almost $2.5 million.

    11.Crypto world tour

    His crypto world tour has taken him to speaking engagements in Stockholm, Romania, Barcelona, Dubai, Prague, Amsterdam, Budapest, Manila, and Uganda where he educates people about crypto. He interacts with the people in the event and answers their questions.

    12.100X Advisors

    After the hack, Ian co-founded a blockchain investment and advisory firm named 100X Advisors with three other associates. He is a General Partner at 100X Advisors . 100X Advisors team have traveled to more than 35 countries evangelizing blockchain while investing in 15 different blockchain startups in 15 different countries.

     

    13.Kucoin

    Ian was looking for a sponsorship partner ever since the hack and finally in August 2018 he found a sponsorship partner in KuCoin, a small exchange headquartered in Singapore. He became KuCoin’s first Global Titan Ambassador, whose goal was to “find the best blockchain technology projects the world has to offer and bring them to the masses before anyone else.” As part of the deal he also agreed to promote the exchange on his social media channels.

    14.Philanthropy

    Originally from humble means, Ian is dedicated to giving back through his philanthropic efforts with Children of Uganda and Black Girls Code.

    15.Where he sees himself in future

    He feels he’ll be living a good life. And will just be trying to help more people adopt crypto and help other people live a better life through crypto. That will mean still making crypto content. Ian and his team want to do a crypto-focused TV show.
